Touching story
The focus of the shoot in Brazil was an exclusive talk with neurosurgeons Owase Jeelani, from Britain, and Gabriel Mufarrej, from Brazil, who separated the conjoined twins Bernardo and Arthur Lima at the head. About to turn four, the boys’ case was very rare and serious; they shared a 15% of the brain in addition to the main vein which carries blood back to the heart.
The live broadcast captured the first reunion of the surgeons with the kids and their parents at the hospital a few months after nine surgeries, which total 44-hours.
Gradually, the doctors disconnected the vein from the brain of one of the brothers and gave that brain time to recompose the circulatory system.
The procedure is groundbreaking due to its success and as it will serve as a reference for similar cases in Latin America.

THE CHALLENGES
Technicalities of a live broadcast using multi sim bonded solutions
To handle this task, ITV flew their own LiveU units from the UK. Two cameras plugged into their own LiveU 300 were used, one for the long shot and the other for the interviewee close-ups, the cut being made at ITV Studios.

Story Productions sent our
Rio de Janeiro based streaming team, to tackle our client’s requests and the British producer-journalist on-site. Having the right crew for the job is essential to succeeding in live broadcasting.

Need for a solid pre-production
There’s not much room for improvisation or error in a live broadcast; the pressure is immense. It’s important that all the necessary aspects of the shoot are organised beforehand: the interviewees have to be ready on time, and the
equipment properly parameterized in advance.
Filming at a hospital
In a studio setting, it’s easier to control and maintain the connectivity and sound. However, this story took place in a hospital. The rooms tend to be too small to fit the interviewees and team plus all of the equipment. Acoustics can be an issue as well. We were able to arrange for a special allowance and get log in to the hospital network.
Coordinating the time zone
Good Morning Britain, a breakfast television programme, is broadcast from 6am to 9am. Since Rio is three hours behind London, the local six-person crew started production at 4am, in order to go live at 5:45am, working in sync between the two countries.

Thank you ITV for relying on our services so that we could be part of this remarkable and touching project. It was a great opportunity to share a good news story to a British audience.
