Behind the scenes: shining a spotlight on Black beauty

Short social media videos made with an exclusively Black cast.

Brazil is a country known for its diverse and multi-ethnic culture, and that includes its rich African heritage. With that in mind, Story Productions was approached by an internet growth company to produce three videos to be published on social networks, aiming at appreciating Black culture and sending the message that beauty is everywhere.

Filmed in January 2023, only Black female artists and models were featured in the videos, with the goal of representing a broad range of Black women.

Black casting

Historically, Black actors have been marginalized and are often cast in supporting roles or as characters perpetuating negative stereotypes, limiting the opportunities for Afro-Brazilians.

However, this “minority” group isn’t outnumbered, as more than 50% of the Brazilian population identifies as Black or mixed race. Still, the entertainment industry has been slow to reflect this diversity, with the majority of lead roles still being occupied by white actors.

The lack of representation in the media has a significant impact on the self-esteem and aspirations of young Black people, reinforcing the idea that they are not important or valued in society, which can lead to feelings of alienation and low self-worth.



That is why initiatives that include a diverse casting and that portray complex and multi-dimensional characters are important.

Each of the videos produced by Story Productions was an isolated episode in which a model was depicted in a step-by-step glow-up. The themes were henna design, skin care routine and Carnaval.
